Our history

Les Auberges de Jeunesse asbl is a non-profit organisation that’s been providing hospitality in Brussels and Wallonia since 1933! Youth hostels were invented as a healthy, exciting travel experience for young people. These days they’re open to people of all ages, but are still primarily targeted at the younger generation.  This shift has come about as hostels have become increasingly better equipped, provided a higher standard of service and offered a wider range of activities.

Our mission

In line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, our aim is to encourage social and cultural tourism, get young people travelling, contribute to their education, help them reach their full potential, and foster a sense of responsible citizenship in a humanist spirit.

More specifically, our aims are as follows:

  • YOUTH - Creating, managing and coordinating a network of youth hostels for young people to meet and sleep, and involving local young people in these hostels’ activities.
  • ETHICS - Creating and maintaining, in all our hostels, a welcoming atmosphere where all guests get along regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, nationality, language, gender or beliefs.
  • TRAVEL - Introducing young people to our network of hostels in Belgium and around the world in an appropriate manner.
  • SUSTAINABILITY - Doing all of this in a way that is sustainable and kind on the environment.

Sustainability

Our organisation upholds universal values and pledges to protect the environment and promote sustainability.

This commitment is reflected in how we build and fit-out our hostels, as well as in our day-to-day activities.  And we want to encourage all our visitors to do the same.
